A Different Kind of Magic
Gorgons are terrifying beasts with huge wings, sharp fangs, and long claws. Though their blood is well known for its magical properties, few have ever faced a gorgon and lived to tell the tale. As a half-gorgon, Melusine is wary of her heritage, but doesn’t think of herself as a monster until after the Blue Kingdom raids her home and takes her prisoner.
For eight years, they drain her of her blood and dignity. When a group of rebel mages breaks into the prison, Melusine is offered something she can’t refuse; a chance for freedom. But there’s a catch. In return for her rescue, she is expected to help the mages seize a power they have lost. Doing so will likely destroy the Blue Kingdom. The chance to harm those who wronged her is tempting, but innocent lives will be lost.
After a warning from Kalais, the valiant but inauspicious son of the fallen North Wind, Melusine begins to see a different side to the mages. He proposes a secret alliance to help him reclaim his throne and Melusine gain true freedom. But the mages claim to have secrets of their own — secrets about Melusine’s family, and answers about her foggy past. As she grapples with the choice of who to trust, Melusine begins to wonder how much of a monster she actually is.
